How Do I Become A Plumber? (5 Tips)

Plumbing is a fantastic trade to get involved with, it can offer you:

  • Good money (average earnings of £29,245)
  • Skill for life that’s always going to be in demand (3,582 positions in this region alone!)
  • Hands-on practical job
  • Rewarding career.

If this ticks your boxes, and you want to become a plumber, we can help!

Here are our top tips on becoming a plumber:

Tip 1: Consider whether you want to learn in a college environment or ‘on the job’. This will help distinguish what type of courses you will take to get to where you want to be. We offer full-time courses, as well as apprenticeships which give you the opportunity to develop your skills whilst working with an employer and earning a wage.

Tip 2: Be aware of what type of course is right for your age group. If you are a school leaver, you will need to do a full-time course, which means either the ‘in college route’ or an apprenticeship with an employer and 1 day a week at college. If you are 19+ and want to retrain you may be more suited to the part-time courses.

Tip 3: If it’s an apprenticeship you think may be the most appealing route to you, you can use our CV Builder via our Career Coach tool to help create a cracking CV to approach employers with. We also have an apprenticeship team in the College who can help you with finding the right employer, preparing your CV/cover letter and give you mock interviews, to ensure you feel confident going into your apprenticeship.

Tip 4: Do your market research, ask family and friends if they have any connections within the industry. If you’re lucky enough to know someone, they may give you experience or even take you on as an apprentice. If not, don’t worry, we work with lots of businesses who are looking for their next plumber!

Tip 5: The plumbing industry is evolving with new technology, so even when you finish studying with us, we would recommend staying on top of the latest trends and continue your learning.

We have dedicated teams of people who can help you; whether that be our school liaison team, apprenticeship team, or plumbing department – they are all here to support you in making the right decision for your future.
