What will I do on this course?
The UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design is an exciting, acclaimed and fast paced course led by practising subject specialists. Our aim is to develop individuality and expand creative and visual thinking through to Level 4; encouraging experimentation of varied materials and approaches. This challenging and exploratory UAL Foundation Diploma allows you to develop individuality and experiment with new ways of creative and visual problem solving. Throughout the year we offer dedicated support to cultivate your creative focus, and become an autonomous practitioner. This course offers the student another free year of education, giving you the opportunity and time to consider the next step of you career, whether that is your application to University, an apprenticeship or an alternative route into the creative industries. This industry is a vast and growing sector whose opportunities are wide and varied; your Foundation year will be the first significant step on this ladder and we are focussed on helping you decide on your future direction and our course will help you achieve your place within this aspirational industry.

The Foundation Diploma is the best way to ensure you make the right choices for your future – the cost of choosing the wrong course at University is significant. Through workshops, demonstrations, individual tutorials and a plethora of creative play you will be given the opportunity to explore the breadth of possibilities within art and design and pursue a sustained investigation into your chosen specialism. Our tutors are practising artists, designers and specialists in their area, which ensures you get dedicated and professional advice. We offer fantastic facilities in a state of the art purpose built environment with your own studio space.
We will help you construct a physical and online portfolio, creative Blog, interview preparation and a written CV. We have a first class record in placing talented students on distinguished degree courses at institutions throughout the country: from Glasgow University to Falmouth and many London institutions including Camberwell, Chelsea, Central Saint Martins, London College of Fashion and LCC, amongst others. There are also great opportunities to progress on to University Centre Weston and their many creative courses. Our natural partnership integrates both staff and facilities throughout the faculty.
Introduces you to the underpinning processes and principles of art and design. You will then be offered the exciting opportunity to rotate through a number of specialist areas including Fine Art and 3D, Visual Communication, Fashion/Surface Pattern Design and Lens Based Media.
This part of the course will enable you to develop a creative focus. With the inclusion of workshops, seminars and dedicated tutorials you will cultivate breadth, knowledge and understanding within your chosen specialised discipline. It will give you the intensive preparation and quality of work necessary to compete for a place on a wide variety of focused BA/FdA University courses in Art & Design.
This is where you develop as an autonomous practitioner alongside the support and guidance of specialist pathway tutorials and 1 to 1 support. This part of the course enables you to write an independent proposal and produce ambitious work which culminates in a dynamic Summer Exhibition, which is open to the public and industry professionals.
You will be assessed through practical studio-based projects and written assignments. A final grade is awarded upon the completion of an extensive personal enquiry and public gallery show.

You will need one A Level in a creative subject and 5 GCSEs at Grade 5/C or above, or the equivalent, together with a strong portfolio of work. You’ll also be asked to attend an interview.
