What will I do on this course?

This challenging and exciting one year UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design allows you to develop individuality and experiment with new ways of creative and visual thinking. You will be given the opportunity to explore the breadth of possibilities within art and design and pursue a sustained investigation into your chosen specialism.

Part One

Introduces you to the underpinning processes and principles of art and design. You will then be offered the exciting opportunity to rotate through a number of specialist areas including Fine Art and 3D, Visual Communication, Fashion/Surface Pattern Design and Lens Based Media.

Part Two

This part of the course will enable you to develop a creative focus. With the inclusion of workshops, seminars and dedicated tutorials you will cultivate breadth, knowledge and understanding within your chosen specialised discipline. It will give you the intensive preparation and quality of work necessary to compete for a place on a wide variety of focused BA/FdA University courses in Art & Design.

Part Three

This is where you develop as an autonomous practitioner alongside the support and guidance of specialist pathway tutorials and 1 to 1 support. This part of the course enables you to write an independent proposal and produce ambitious work which culminates in a dynamic Summer Exhibition, which is open to the public and industry professionals.


You will be assessed through practical studio-based projects and written assignments. A Final grade is awarded upon the completion of an extensive personal enquiry and public gallery show.

Entry Requirements

One A Level in a creative subject and 5 GCSE’s at Grade 5/C or above or the equivalent, plus a successful interview and a portfolio.
