I was attracted to Creative Arts Weston because of the recording and engineering facilities within the music department. I also liked the smaller class sizes as that meant more individual contact with the tutors. Throughout my five years at Creative Arts Weston it always felt like a safe space to learn, I knew that I could make mistakes and grow from them, and that if I needed anything I could go to my tutors and be supported.
For me the best thing about my time here was the access to recording studios and engineering equipment, and the ability to experiment with all of it. I ended up getting my first job at one of the studios we visited as part of a residential trip on my degree. One of my tutors put me forward for the role and I felt confident going into it, knowing that I had developed the skills needed to work professionally.
Since graduating I have worked as a music producer, a recording engineer and on live sound recordings. I’m currently working as a professional bass player and touring with a band. If you are going to freelance within the creative industries, you must wear many hats and that’s what I love. Every day is different, and I could be working on several things at any one time. I think my time at Creative Arts Weston has prepared me for a multi-faceted career as I was given a great level of independence and encouraged to try as many different things as possible.
My advice for any prospective or current students is to participate in all elements of the industry. Visit live venues and recording studios and engage with the local scene. Collaborate with other students, tap into their skills, and offer your services to them. Just get involved with all aspects of music wherever you can!
