Richard's educational journey at Weston College serves as an inspiring story for adult learners considering significant career shifts. Motivated by a desire to enter the veterinary nursing field, Richard chose Weston College's Access to Higher Education course to acquire the necessary qualifications while balancing his work commitments. 

"I wanted to enter into a veterinary nursing programme but required higher-level qualifications. The Access course provided me with equivalents to the required A Level science subjects without having to attend daily classes," Richard explained. 

The course, designed with a career-focused approach, equipped Richard not only with theoretical knowledge but also practical skills through the collaboration with Puxton Park which offered hands-on experience with a range of animals. 

As Richard progressed through the programme, his dedication and stellar performance in the Access course opened unforeseen doors and his career aspirations expanded beyond veterinary nursing. "Through the course, I achieved the maximum number of distinction points and managed to secure a placement in Veterinary Science at the University of Bristol. I’m now on my way to becoming a veterinary surgeon. This wouldn’t be happening without the Access course," Richard proudly stated. 

Financially supported by an Advanced Learner Loan, Richard found the course structure accommodating for adult learners with work and home commitments. The lecturers provided valuable support, responding to queries outside of contact hours and guiding him into higher education. 

Reflecting on the resources at Weston College, Richard praised the well-equipped science lab and the animal management centre at Puxton Park. The library, e-books, journal access, and laptops all facilitated coursework completion. 

Beyond the academic benefits, Richard highlighted the ongoing support he has received from his tutors. "I’ve had support from the teaching staff at Weston College a good year after finishing the course," he shared. 

His advice to potential students considering the Access course is unequivocal: "Do it. The research and referencing aspect will set you well in advance of your peers at degree level. The Access course is specifically tailored to the industry you are interested in entering, giving you an advantage not just in applying for a degree but also in acclimatising to the first year of university." Richard's success serves as encouragement for all adult learners looking for a career-changing and life-changing experience.
