Electro-Mechanical Degree Apprenticeship at Babcock International
- The programme combines study at Weston College with full immersion in our Engineering Design team in Bristol.
- In the workplace, you will initially shadow colleagues to develop a solid understanding of a Design Engineer’s role and its application to naval and defence engineering. You will grow your experience through exposure to work such as Launch Control System projects, Research & Development, and In-Service Support.
- As you progress, you will begin to take on more of your own tasks and start working independently, collaborating with your team to solve problems effectively. Your responsibilities will be carefully managed to ensure you are always equipped for the tasks at hand. Over time, you will develop practical skills, including requirements definition, electrical design, and the use of hand tools and test equipment, all while enhancing your teamwork and problem-solving abilities.

You will gain your degree by studying for a BEng (Honours) with Weston College. Throughout your apprenticeship, you’ll spend time at the Weston College Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton and the University of the West of England’s Frenchay Campus.
In addition to pursuing your degree, you may have the opportunity to complete further qualifications essential for your role, such as IOSH.
By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll be well-prepared for the role of Electrical Design Engineer, with excellent short and long-term career prospects. You will have gained specialist skills working in defence and played an integral role in creating a safer and more secure world.
