TLA Coach
When did you join Weston College?
"I joined Weston College in August 2021 as an English and ESOL lecturer for two years before moving to the expanding ESOL team full-time. While there, I completed my CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualification, became a Staff Wellbeing Champion, and took on a part-time TLA coach role in the Quality department. In December 2024, I successfully transitioned to a full-time TLA coach position."
Why did you join Weston College?
"I joined Weston College as I was passionate about supporting learners in an FE setting, where education can have a real impact on people’s lives. I was particularly drawn to the college’s commitment to inclusivity and both learner and staff development; I wanted to contribute to that by helping learners build essential skills for their future."
How do you spend your day?
"As a TLA coach, I conduct developmental and teacher training observations, deliver staff training through COGS, INSETs and Teach Meets, represent the Quality team at informal interviews and microteaches, mentor new teachers and contribute to the delivery of the Level 3 Award in Education and Training. A typical week includes around four observations (with pre-meets and reviews), delivering a staff training session, and supporting interviews. Additionally, I still teach one ESOL class a week and deliver on the New Staff Induction programme once a month. ”
How has the College supported your career development?
“The college has given me fantastic opportunities for professional growth. Since joining, I’ve completed my CELTA and Mental Health First Aid qualification, and I’m now starting a Level 3 Assessing Award. "
What have you been involved in while working at Weston College?
"I am part of the Staff Wellbeing team as a Wellbeing Champion, where I provide and signpost support to colleagues and organise wellbeing initiatives within my team. I am also a member of the Staff Global Majority Group and I’m on the Mental Health and Wellbeing Committee."
What’s the best thing about working at Weston College?
"The most rewarding part of my role is seeing staff progress, especially as their confidence grows in their teaching careers. Coaching provides me with the same sense of fulfilment as teaching learners, as I’m still supporting and nurturing growth. I enjoy collaborating with staff across different faculties and recognising and celebrating their development. This coach role also allows me to reflect on my own practice and develop more innovative approaches in my teaching"
"I highly recommend the college as a workplace due to its strong focus on professional growth and development. There are numerous opportunities to advance your career, with support and encouragement to pursue both internal and external CPD. Beyond career progression, the college also fosters a vibrant staff community, offering ways to connect through staff groups, social events, and activities like the annual Christmas quiz."
