Level 3
Chemistry, A Level
Discover the building blocks of matter and how they shape the world around us. You’ll explore the fundamental principles of chemistry, from atoms and molecules to reactions and materials, developing essential practical skills and problem-solving abilities. Chemistry A Level prepares you for a wide range of scientific careers and higher education opportunities.
Course Overview
At Loxton Campus, Chemistry A Level provides a deep understanding of chemical principles, practical laboratory skills, and analytical thinking. You will delve into the fundamental principles and theories that underpin the study of matter, its composition, properties and transformations. You will investigate topics such as atomic structure, bonding, kinetics, thermodynamics, organic chemistry, and analytical techniques.
Our modern laboratories are equipped with advanced equipment, enabling hands-on experiments that bring theory to life. Experienced teachers provide expert guidance, helping you develop both theoretical knowledge and practical competence.
You will automatically join our Career Excellence Hub and gain access to additional activities, guest lectures, and industry insights that enhance your progression into higher education or a science-related career.
Experienced and passionate teachers will guide you through the programme and our Tutor Learning Mentors will help you develop study strategies, prepare for assessments, and plan your progression.

Where will I study?
Our Sixth Form, located at Loxton Campus, offers state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide a university-like environment. You will benefit from access to our recently refurbished and well-equipped laboratories, which include modern apparatus and plenty of reference resources, allowing you to conduct experiments and investigations to reinforce your theoretical knowledge.
How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you will work towards an AS qualification, which is completed at the end of the first year and provides a strong foundation before progressing to full A Level study in Year 2.
This structure offers flexibility – you may choose to study four subjects in Year 1 and take three into Year 2. AS Levels also carry UCAS points. You can find more details in our dedicated AS Level FAQs on the College website.
How will I be assessed?
- Examinations at the end of Year 2, covering both theoretical knowledge and practical understanding
- Practical assessments to demonstrate competence in laboratory work and investigation
