Level 3
Computer Science, A Level
Level 3
Computer Science, A Level
If you’re curious about coding, algorithms, and the technology that drives the modern world, A Level Computer Science is your gateway to an exciting career. You’ll learn how to think logically, solve problems, and develop practical skills in programming, software development, and computational analysis, preparing you for a rewarding career or higher education in the tech industry.
Course Overview
A Level Computer Science provides a strong foundation in the principles, theory, and practical applications of computing. You’ll explore a wide range of topics, including computer systems, programming languages, data structures, algorithms, software development, and computational problem-solving.
At Loxton Campus, you’ll study in industry-standard computer labs equipped with the latest hardware and software, giving you a hands-on environment to practise coding, develop projects, and explore emerging technologies.
Our dedicated Tutor Learning Mentors will provide guidance and assistance to help you develop effective study skills and prepare for exams.
During your first year, you’ll study towards an AS Level, a nationally recognised qualification that provides a solid baseline understanding of the subject. This allows flexibility for learners wishing to study four subjects in Year 1 and then progress with three subjects to full A Level in Year 2. AS Levels also carry UCAS points to support university progression.
You’ll also join our Career Excellence Hub, giving you access to work placements, industry projects, and networking opportunities with technology companies and professionals.
What will I study?
You will cover the technical, theoretical, and practical aspects of computing, including:
- Structure and function of processors and processor performance
- Systems software, applications software, and software development
- Compression, encryption, and hashing
- Databases and data management
- Networks and network security
- Algorithmic thinking and problem solving
You can also follow a pathway aligned with your career aspirations, choosing options such as cyber security, media, or young enterprise. Additional certifications such as Microsoft Office and LinkedIn courses can complement your learning.
Please note: Studying Mathematics A Level alongside Computer Science is mandatory, as it complements the logical and problem-solving aspects of the subject.
Exciting Opportunities
Throughout your course, you will have the opportunity to:
- Participate in coding workshops, collaborative projects, and industry-led seminars
- Attend guest lectures from computer science professionals
- Engage in practical projects to develop software and programming skills
- Access support from Tutor Learning Mentors for exam preparation and study strategies
Where will I study?
Our Sixth Form, located at Loxton Campus, offers state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide a university-like environment. You will benefit from access to dedicated computer labs equipped with the latest hardware and software. This stimulating environment allows you to explore and apply computer science concepts.
How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you will work towards an AS qualification, which is completed at the end of the first year and provides a strong foundation before progressing to full A Level study in Year 2.
This structure offers flexibility – you may choose to study four subjects in Year 1 and take three into Year 2. AS Levels also carry UCAS points. You can find more details in our dedicated AS Level FAQs on the College website.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment is a combination of exams and coursework in your second year, evaluating your practical and theoretical understanding of computer science.
