Course Overview
At Loxton Campus, the A Level in English Language & Literature provides a stimulating environment for exploring both classic and contemporary texts. You’ll study novels, plays, poetry, and non-fiction, alongside examining how language works in different contexts.

In the first year of your course, you’ll have the opportunity to follow a pathway that aligns with your career aspirations. You can choose from options including creative writing, media, and debating.

Where will I study?
You’ll study at Loxton Campus – a purpose-built facility designed to simulate a university environment and equipped with specialist facilities, learning resources, and collaborative spaces to support study.
How do AS and A Levels work?
You will normally study three or four A Levels over two years. In Year 1, you will work towards an AS qualification, which is completed at the end of the first year and provides a strong foundation before progressing to full A Level study in Year 2.
This structure offers flexibility – you may choose to study four subjects in Year 1 and take three into Year 2. AS Levels also carry UCAS points.

How will I be assessed?
- Examinations (80%): Analysing unseen texts, comparing literary works, and evaluating language use
- Coursework (20%): Independent research projects and original writing tasks
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grades 9–4, including maths, and a 5 in English
- Strong reading, writing, and analytical skills
- Interest in exploring both language and literary texts in depth
