STEVE
Practice Educator in Health
When did you join Weston College?
I joined Weston College in 2023, having previously worked on the frontline for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust for six and a half years, including throughout the covid pandemic; two and half of those were as a Registered Paramedic. Prior to the Ambulance service, I spent 17 years in support service management in schools. I am still a registered Paramedic.
Why did you join Weston College?
I was looking for an opportunity to utilise the skills and experiences that I gained during my time in the ambulance service, whilst not serving on the frontline. I also wanted to focus more on my work / life balance and my family. Weston College has offered me that chance.
How do you spend your day?
I work full-time, Monday to Friday. I generally teach three to four days a week and spend the other time completing my admin, doing CPD, or researching for my lessons so that I can keep improving the content I deliver. I teach apprentices and this means I get to travel to Bristol and Gloucester to deliver the face-to-face sessions or use the amazing Virtual Classroom at the College’s South West Skills Campus.
How has the College supported your career development?
My manager has arranged for me to shadow some excellent teachers at the College and has arranged for me to complete my teacher training in- house. I also have regular contact with the Teaching Learning and Assessment team if I need any additional support.
What have you been involved in while working at Weston College?
At Weston College, I have been invited to be part of a very exciting project working with the NHS Elect Team that could shape the way health education is delivered to apprentices.
What’s the best thing about working at Weston College?
I love the positive work environment the College has, the work ethic of those around me, the support of team and my manager. Everyone I have met has been friendly and helpful.
