English and maths skills are essential to everyday life, and gaining a recognised qualification in these subjects is more important than you might think... 

At Weston College, we are committed to making sure that all of our learners are able to achieve a reasonable level of English and maths.

This is because English and maths are valuable skills that will help you succeed in life and in the workplace.

Students of all ages learn English and/or maths at Weston College. We have outstanding teachers and offer a range of support and guidance to help you achieve your goals, whether you want to understand the basics, or gain a qualification to help you access further study.

We have a selection of English and maths courses available to suit you and your needs. Classes run at various points during the day or in the evening, on-campus or online.

• You must be aged 19 years or over and be able to commit for the duration of the course and complete an exam.
• You must be a UK/EU passport holder or have lived in the EU for the last three years, or married to a UK national and lived in the UK for 1 year and a day at the start of the course.
• You will be expected to attend the college premises for elements of their course and to complete their assessments within the college.
• To access our free courses,you must not already hold a grade 4/level 2 qualification in English and/or maths.

It doesn't matter what level you're at right now, the important thing is taking the first step! Come in for an informal assessment and we can get you started on improving your skills and qualifications. Our team is friendly and approachable, and are here to help you with as much support and guidance as you need. There are many courses and options available, whether you are looking to study in the day or evening.

Grade 3/D in English/maths
If you already have a GCSE at grade 3/D, and are looking to improve your grade, you can study and re-sit it with us.

Grade 2/E in English/maths
If you already hold a English or maths GCSE at grade 2/E or below, we can work with you to get you on a course which is a stepping stone to your GCSE pass at grade 4/C or above.

Course Overview:

At the start of the year, you will be assessed to see which level you are working at. The resources and teaching skills used will then allow you to develop skills at your own pace.

The course lasts one year and includes tuition of two and a half to three hours per week, starting in September 2019.

The course will develop your skills in three areas:

• Speaking and listening – you’ll become more confident and fluent in using standard English to express yourself in a variety of real-life situations.
• Reading – you’ll develop skills in reading and responding to a range of texts based around real-life situations.
• Writing – you’ll develop writing skills in a range of real-life scenarios, improving your accuracy and developing your ideas.

Assessment:

You’ll be assessed by exams in three areas – speaking and listening, reading, and writing – which take place at key points within the year.

Progression:

Functional Skills English allows you to develop your literacy skills in real-life situations. It’s a national qualification that’s recognised and accepted by employers, and can also act as a stepping stone to a GCSE. Functional Skills English has many positive benefits, including improving employability prospects and helping you progress to other courses at Weston College.

This course will help you to develop your English skills to the standard that most businesses expect from their employees.

This GCSE lasts one year and tuition is up to three hour a week for 32 weeks, starting in September 2019. It is assessed with two exams in June 2020 and four written assessments during class time.

You will learn how to:

• Identify and interpret information and ideas
• Explain, comment on and analyse how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers, using relevant subject terminology
• Compare ideas and perspectives
• Evaluate texts critically and support with appropriate textual references
• Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively
• Use appropriate tone and style for different audiences
• Organise information and ideas, using structural and grammatical features to support coherence and cohesion
• Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect with accurate spelling and punctuation
• Listen and respond appropriately to others, including questions and feedback
• Use spoken Standard English effectively in speeches and presentation.
• GCSE qualifications will allow you to progress onto further qualifications at the College.

An ESOL course will help you improve your English at home, at work and in the wider community. You’ll develop your skills in three main areas:

• Speaking and listening – you’ll understand English and speak with more accuracy.
• Reading – you’ll increase your vocabulary and understand more information.
• Writing – you’ll be able to write using correct grammar and vocabulary.

ESOL classes will also give you the opportunity to socialise and meet new people.

Assessment:

You’ll be assessed by exams in three areas – speaking and listening, reading, and writing – which take place when you are ready.

Progression:

ESOL classes will allow you to develop your literacy skills in real-life situations. You’ll also gain a national qualification that’s recognised by employers and will provide you with more job opportunities. You’ll also be able to make friends and improve your confidence, while learning in a friendly atmosphere.

Most employers look for a sound understanding of maths when recruiting, usually at GCSE level. We use maths in many aspects of our daily lives, both at work and at home, and a qualification in maths is a valuable resource that can help you in many ways.

There are many options available to pay for your maths course, and many students are eligible to study for free.

Assessment:

Functional Skills Maths is assessed by one paper according to the level you are working at and this exam will take place at key points within the year.

Progression:

Functional Skills Maths allows you to develop your literacy skills in real-life situations. It’s a national qualification that’s recognised and accepted by employers, and can also act as a stepping stone to a GCSE. Functional Skills Maths has many positive benefits, including improving employability prospects and helping you progress to other courses at Weston College.

This course will help you develop your maths skills to the level that most employers are looking for.

The course lasts one year and includes three hours of tuition a week for 32 weeks. It starts in September 2019 and is assessed by calculator and non-calculator exams in May and June 2020.

You will learn about:

• Algebra
• Ratio, proportion and rates of change
• Geometry and measures
• Probability
• Statistics.
GCSE qualifications will allow you to progress onto further qualifications at the College.

Oliwier
Oliwier moved to the UK from Poland just before his GCSEs and worked hard at Weston College. He maintained a positive attitude, regularly helped classmates, and sought clarification on challenging topics. His dedication earned him a grade 5 in his GCSEs.
