Weston Bay

Weston Bay is the College's pioneering autism spectrum residential facility.

Based in a former hotel on Clevedon Road, Weston-super-Mare, Weston Bay was the first facility of its kind in the UK to be run by a Further Education college when it opened in 2012. It provides independent living training to young people on the autism spectrum in the Bristol and Somerset area, and has gained national and international attention for its pioneering provision.

Weston Bay is conveniently situated on the sea-front, between the College’s Knightstone and Loxton Campuses. It has eight bedrooms and four flats, allowing residents to get used to living away from home by managing household tasks like cooking, washing, ironing and cleaning in addition to developing their social skills. Weston Bay also provides support with independent living, employability, accessing the community, study skills and mobility training in an environment where social skills are embedded throughout. Length of stay ranges from one night to three months, depending on individual requirements.

What makes Weston Bay unique?

Weston Bay was created to support students on the autism spectrum to improve their social and independent living skills and equip them with the experiences and knowledge that will help them transition in to independent living, employment or higher education.

Tutors and students work together to plan an individual programme which may include sessions to help improve the student's social and studying skills, and their independent living skills. They will be supported to access the community and given the opportunity to use assistive technology to aid these areas of development. Students will also be encouraged and supported to undertake work experience and job coaching to give them the confidence to move into employment.

Weston Bay is staffed by trained professionals at all times and is open all year, with the exception of two weeks over the Christmas period.

Who can stay at Weston Bay?

Weston Bay provides bespoke individual support to learners on the autism spectrum between the ages of 16 and 25. Learners aged over 18 have the opportunity to make use of the residential setting which consists of four self-contained flats for students wishing to stay for longer periods of time, and a further 10 bedsits for shorter stays. The length of time a student stays is determined on an individual basis. Students aged under 18 will be able to participate in the day time training activities.

It features a library, new computer equipment, technology-enhanced ‘pods’ for group study, a café, classrooms, social spaces and so much more… We’ve maintained the traditional elements of the design which makes the Winter Gardens so iconic, but also enhanced the new parts of the building to create an events and educational facility that meets the needs of today’s student body and wider local community while also inspiring the learners of tomorrow.
