In this article we’ll be talking through our nominees for the Large Employer of the Year award. Nominated are: Wessex Water, Avon Fire & Rescue and Bristol Port Company.

Wessex Water
Wessex Water are a water supply and sewerage utility company that serves across the South West.
Wessex Water are proud members of the government's 5% Club, with around 9% of their workforce in long term development. Each year they employ around 30 new apprentices across a wide range of standards. In addition, they support around 80 of their existing colleagues to develop their skills and knowledge through a wide range of initiatives.
Wessex Water work in partnership with Weston College, with around 60 apprentices with the college at any one time. The College is a fundamental part of their workforce development, not only supporting the apprenticeship scheme, but also through Skills Bootcamps, Functional Skills, and work experience.
Avon Fire & Rescue
Avon Fire & Rescue is responsible for delivering essential emergency and protection services to the communities residing in Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire.
Avon Fire & Rescue engage with Weston College in several ways, primarily through the provision of apprenticeships, but also extending their support into the recruitment of non-firefighter roles, including Digital, Administration, and Leadership and Management.
In 2022, Avon Fire & Rescue and Weston College forged a strategic partnership aimed at collaboratively implementing the Operational Fire Fighter Apprenticeship. In less than two years since the introduction of this programme, they have successfully enrolled over 80 apprentices who are actively undergoing training to become Fire Fighters.
Bristol Port Company
Bristol Port Company holds a prominent position as a significant regional employer, providing comprehensive shipping, distribution, and logistics services from the esteemed Bristol Port.
Since 2017, the company has fostered a successful partnership with the College, utilising the apprenticeship scheme to enhance the skills and capabilities of their senior leaders through the Leadership & Management Apprenticeship programme. Leveraging the power of apprenticeship initiatives, Bristol Port Company actively facilitates the creation of high-quality apprenticeships in diverse fields such as management, engineering, and IT.
The are now offering industry placements to Weston College learners and have recently engaged with the digital learning technology team to collaborate on VR technology that is being used for safety training at the Port.
