Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to www.weston.ac.uk, www.ucw.ac.uk and www.weiot.ac.uk

This website is run by the Weston College Group. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website.

For example, that means you should be able to:

  • Change colours, contrast levels and fonts

  • Zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen

  • Navigate most of the website using just a keyboard

  • Navigate most of the website using speech recognition software

  • Listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

  • Use the ReciteMe tool bar to adjust page settings to your personal preferences.

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

Videos don’t have subtitles embedded, they must be turned on via the YouTube control buttons.

Some areas of the website feature complex data which is pulled in from external resources (such as course and career systems) and these are under ongoing review.

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

Weston College Group is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

  • Videos

  • The videos are hosted on YouTube to ensure good quality video across multiple platforms.

  • The closed captions are generated by YouTube and by default are turned off. These must be controlled by the YouTube control buttons embedded in the player on this site.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing information about our services. For example our policies and procedures. By September 2024, we plan to either fix these or replace them with accessible HTML pages.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. For example, we do not plan to fix Weston College Group Annual Report 2016/2017.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

In order to maintain high standards of accessibility, we are expanding the tools we use to include Deques Axe. Internal accessibility audits take place on a monthly basis. This involves using tools such as Axe to check for accessibility issues, prioritising the top visited pages and working down.

Preparation of this accessibility statement

This statement was prepared 15th December 2020 It was last reviewed on 16th February 2023.

This website was last tested in February 2023. The test was carried out by the Website Development Marketing Officer at Weston College.

We used this approach to deciding on a sample of pages to test, the home page, a standard content page and a resource page – this covers the different types of pages on this site.

This was actioned using Deques Axe

One Message, Different Voices

Take a look at this powerful film made by the staff of Weston College to show how important it is for everyone from different backgrounds to be included. The film shares heartfelt stories and interviews with a diverse group of staff, showing how accepting different identities and backgrounds can make a big difference. Its purpose is to encourage viewers to think about their own biases and work towards making our community more welcoming to all. We invite everyone, regardless of their background, to join us and be a part of our journey toward a more inclusive future.

Halo workplace logo

Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.
