Course Studied: FDA Film and Media Production Arts and BA (Hons) Lens-Based Media (Top-Up).
Where are they now? Cerys studied Film and Media Arts Production before being awarded a place on the Digital Documentary MA at Royal Holloway, University of London.
I chose Creative Arts Weston because I wanted to study in a welcoming environment and the concentrated class sizes meant I had plenty of access to 1-1 learning.
Starting off I had very little practical or technical knowledge in filmmaking. However, with the encouragement and support of the incredible staff at Creative Arts Weston, I was able to gain the skills to create successful films and I am now progressing well in my field. The programmes I studied helped me to understand everything about filmmaking, from pre-production all the way through to post-production - including things like camera skills, editing, lighting, marketing as well as emphasising the importance of effective communication and planning.
I have so many great memories from my time at Creative Arts Weston, but the biggest highlight was probably when we got the opportunity to travel to Berlin and visit Cashmere Radio, a really cool non-profit experimental radio station celebrating local collectives and community. I had previously been in contact with Cashmere, and so to be supported and encouraged by my course and teachers to actually go out and visit them was so exciting. It was definitely an experience of a lifetime.
Another highlight was also getting the opportunity to make a film during the trip to Berlin. It was such an amazing experience and gave me the chance to broaden my contacts and network – something that is so important within the film and media industry. Creative Arts Weston is so good at supporting students to be prepared for industry and future careers, the trip to Berlin was something that really helped with that.
My advice to anybody considering studying at Creative Arts Weston is: do it. The thing I loved about studying there is that they really care about each student individually. I found you really get out what you put it in, the staff do their absolute best to create a supportive and empowering environment, and make sure the best opportunities are always accessible. If you want a great learning experience and to get the most out of your course, then Creative Arts Weston certainly offers that.
The support available is so amazing, not once did I feel I had to struggle alone. When things were really difficult during the pandemic, there were so many resources and support services available to help me with whatever I needed. That’s something I haven’t really seen anywhere else.
I gained many skills not only through my course but also from being a student ambassador, I have learnt how to communicate, how to be confident and to believe in myself which in turn has afforded me many great opportunities. I have learnt if you believe in yourself so will others.
Since graduating from Creative Arts Weston, I was awarded a place at Royal Holloway, University of London in Egham, Surrey to study on the MA Digital Documentary programme. Creative Arts Weston helped me gain all the skills I needed to progress in my studies and my career, and I’m so happy with where I am and everything I have achieved so far!
