This exciting course has been developed to provide you with in-depth knowledge of the topics required for a successful career in the music industry. You will learn about the music industry, performing and recording, using professional music software, composition, critique, and music production. You will develop practical skills through hands-on sessions in our specialist recording studios, rehearsal rooms and performance spaces. You will be given the opportunity to have instrument and vocal tuition and you can develop advanced computer skills using industry-standard production software, including Logic Pro X, Ableton Live and ProTools. You will also develop an understanding of music in its cultural context.
We’ll help develop your performance techniques and improve your song writing. You will learn to diversify your skills, writing music for television and film, and you will get the opportunity to record in professional recording studios and to perform in live music venues.
You will be taught by professional musicians with extensive experience in the industry, and your lecturers will fully support you in developing confidence, interpersonal skills, and good working practices, all of which will improve your employability. As part of our collaborative community, you will devise powerful and engaging pieces of work and then deliver dynamic performances. We will also help you develop your analytical and creative skills ensuring that you stand out from the competition.
You will undertake an industry placement and be given regular opportunities to perform or provide production support at gigs, here at the college plus locally and across wider areas. You will be given the chance to work at a variety of festivals, either on stage or behind the scenes. You’ll become part of our Creative Arts Career Excellence Hub, which is endorsed by leading industry partners, who are actively involved throughout your whole training programme. This provides unrivalled access to potential employers and the opportunity to develop your creative network. You will benefit from studio visits, gigging opportunities, work experience and guest lectures from industry professionals.
As part of this study programme, you will develop your maths and English skills, and attend tutorials and Individual Development (ID). You will also complete an extended industry placement. All aspects of your study programme will be discussed at your interview.

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE
This course will ensure you can:
- Understand a range of activities, roles, and relationships in developing and producing a musical performance, and/or collaborative activity.
- Analyse and research musical and production components in music performance, and within a composition.
- Apply and evaluate composition and critical listening skills.
- Identify progression opportunities within the music performance and production sector.
- Evaluate critical perspectives that influence the analysis of performance and production activities.
- Appreciate the contexts within which music performance and production are positioned.
- Analyse and research a production design brief in music performance.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
You will be assessed through practical and written assignments throughout the programme.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
Successful completion of the diploma will allow you to progress to the extended diploma. Successful completion of the extended diploma will enable you to progress to BA (Hons) Professional Music Performance & Production. You will be well equipped to enter a range of careers, including musician, songwriter, composer or foley artist.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You will need five GCSEs at grades 9-4 including English and maths, or a qualifying level 2 qualification (merit) plus a successful interview/audition will be required.
