Octavia
Lecturer in Law & Digital Coach
When did you join Weston College?
I joined Weston College in September 2020 after being made redundant during the Covid 19 Pandemic. Before the pandemic I was teaching English as a foreign language in Lopburi, Thailand.
Why did you join Weston College?
Having gained a Law Degree and taught English abroad, I knew I wanted to combine the two and teach Law. An opportunity at Weston College came up as a Sixth Form Law Lecturer and I applied the same day! The thing that made Weston College stand apart from other colleges was their promise to help develop and nurture staff with continued training opportunities and progression.
How do you spend your day?
As a full time lecturer my days vary depending on what classes I teach. If I’m not teaching lessons then I am creating resources, marking or meeting students to support them with their studies.
How has the College supported your career development?
Weston College has supported my career in numerous ways. Not only did Weston College help me to achieve my Level 5 Diploma in Training and Education, but they have also encouraged me to complete a postgraduate course in supporting those on the Autism Spectrum. This has in turn lead to me becoming an Inclusivity Champion for my area, working closely with the Sixth Form and our Autism Provision.
What have you been involved in while working at Weston College?
Since being at Weston College I have had the opportunity to be involved in a number of things. Most notably, this year I have become a Digital Coach. This role allows me to expand on my digital pedagogy whilst working closely with colleagues across the college to enhance digital skills.
What’s the best thing about working at Weston College?
The best thing about working at Weston College is the staff! Coming in as a brand-new teacher I was so worried, but the staff were nothing but supportive. The encouragement I have received is next to none and I wouldn’t want to work anywhere else!
