STUDIED: Health & Social Care BTEC Extended Diploma
FORMER SCHOOL: Clevedon School
“I chose this course because I have always had an interest in health and social care. I've always admired how healthcare professionals work holistically with individuals to help them heal and recover. The course seemed like the perfect way to learn more about the industry and gain the necessary skills to pursue a career in healthcare.
One of the highlights of the course was the practical elements it offered. We had access to the simulation room, where we could learn and practice new skills relevant to working in the NHS. The simulation room truly recreates a real-life environment, giving me a glimpse of what it would be like to work in the sector. It was an invaluable opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge and gain practical experience. Being able to practice skills in such an authentic environment was instrumental in preparing me for the realities of working in healthcare.
The support I received from the staff at Weston College was exceptional. They provided us with a wealth of resources and numerous opportunities to develop our individual skills. Most importantly, they fostered a safe and supportive environment where we were encouraged to be confident in our work and ask for help whenever needed. This support system played a crucial role in enabling me to produce my best work and feel prepared for my future career.
Work experience was another invaluable aspect of the course. Through placements in social and clinical settings, I had the opportunity to apply what I learned in the classroom to real-world situations. It not only allowed me to develop essential skills but also gave me a deeper understanding of the healthcare sector. Working alongside professionals and interacting with individuals in need of care taught me resilience and the importance of a holistic approach.
Guest lectures were a regular occurrence during the course via the Weston College Careers Excellence Hub for Health and Social Care, that you automatically become part of as soon as you enrol on the course. These sessions brought in experts from various fields within healthcare, who shared their knowledge and experiences with us. The insights gained from these guest speakers were immensely valuable, both for our assignments and for shaping our future careers. Their expertise and guidance provided a broader perspective on the industry and offered inspiration for our own journeys.
Meeting employers during my time at Weston College was another significant advantage. The college facilitated interactions with employers, such as through interviews with representatives from the NHS to determine our second-year placements. These interactions gave me the opportunity to ask questions and gain insights into the specific career path I wanted to pursue. It was a wonderful chance to connect with professionals already working in the industry and gain a better understanding of what my future could hold.
Looking ahead, my next steps after Weston College involve seeking an apprenticeship within the NHS. I am excited about the prospect of learning and working simultaneously, gaining new knowledge and experiences along the way. Ultimately, my career goal is to become an Occupational Therapist. While this may require further study at university after completing the apprenticeship, I feel well-prepared and confident in pursuing this path thanks to the support and guidance I received at Weston College.”
