Vocational Technical Diploma and License to Practise
If you’re passionate about making a positive impact on the lives of children, this technical diploma is the ideal choice for you. This course will provide you with the licence to practice as a fully qualified staff member under the Early Years Foundation Stage staff-to-child ratio at Level 2, meaning on successful completion you can move straight into the Early Years industry.
Through this comprehensive programme, you will learn about child development from birth to seven years old, health and safety, safeguarding, the role of the Early Years Practitioner and a wide range of other topics. This course is a full time course with 3 days spent in college and 2 days spent on work experience in a pre-school or nursery setting where you will develop your skills in a real-work environment.

You will be offered a range of guest lecturers and workshops delivered by industry professionals. Our unrivalled exposure to employers will enable you to bridge the gap between theory and practice, ensuring you are well-prepared to secure your first post or take the next step in your career.
What does this course involve
You will gain a broad understanding of the childcare sector and start to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need to become an excellent practitioner. You will be offered a work placement within an Early Years setting to demonstrate and develop your skills.
This course consists of 14 modules that will develop you into an effective, relevant childcare practitioner. Modules will include: • Roles and responsibilities of the Early Years Practioner • Health and Safety • Equality, Diversity and Inclusion • Safeguarding • Child development • Care Routines for babies and young children • Planning and delivering purposeful activities • Promoting play • Well-being, physical activity and healthy lifestyles • Special Education Needs and Disability • Partnership working
You will also develop your maths and English skills, attend tutorials and complete extended industry placement (totalling 250 hours over the year).
Successful completion of this programme will give you your license to practice as a fully qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner.
Assessment method
Each of the 14 modules has an assignment alongside it. You will be assessed in a range of ways including essays, posters, group work and presentations.
You will also have practical criteria that will be observed in your placement setting.
Future opportunities
Upon completion of this course, you can transition directly into industry as a level 2 practitioner. You may also move onto a Level 3 course such as our Education and Early Years T Level or our Level 3 Early Years Educator apprenticeship.
Entry requirements
A genuine interest in working with children and people is an absolute necessity. You will require at least 5 GCSEs at grade 9-2 with at least two at grade 4 including a grade 4 in either maths or English. A suitable Level 1 qualification or traineeship will also be considered alongside the maths and English requirements.
On enrolment you will be required to undertake a DBS check, which the college will pay for.
