Sector-based work academies

If you are receiving benefits, a sector-based work academy can give you vital experience and help you achieve employment.

Sector based work academies are aimed at getting people into employment as well as helping businesses to recruit high quality staff who help to sustain and grow their business.

These academies are run in conjunction with local job centres, local and national businesses, and Weston College. The courses are bespoke to the employer in order to develop the skills and knowledge each individual employer is looking for.

You’ll receive training and experience in the industry relative to that particular employer, teaching you vital skills such as:

  • Customer service skills
  • Working as part of a team
  • Inductions and first days in a new job
  • Soft skills including communication
  • Employability skills
  • Industry specific qualifications.

Each course is individual, and usually runs for two to three weeks. Every course will build up to a guaranteed interview for all those taking part, so there’s a really good chance of you getting a job at the end.

Company representatives may also visit throughout the course, giving you the opportunity to showcase your skills before the interview.

Halo workplace logo

Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.
