Amy
Lecturer in STEM (Chemistry)
When did you join Weston College?
I joined Weston College in August 2022, having just graduated from a PGCE in Bristol. I had some tutoring experience prior in A Level Biology and Chemistry.
Why did you join Weston College?
I was aware of my teaching skill set and how much I enjoyed teaching different aspects of science and knew I wanted to teach A Levels. I did some job hunting and found a teaching position in STEM at Weston College, taking over the planning and running of the Chemistry A Level. After some research, I found that Weston College was seen to have a friendly and ambitious ethos, and this was reflected in my interviewing process and induction.
How do you spend your day?
I work full time from Monday to Friday. I spend most of my time in the classroom with the students, whether that be in lessons or in small group catch up sessions, which has enabled me to form strong and positive relationships with the students and provide them with ample support.
How has the College supported your career development?
My manager is always more than happy to pop in the classroom when requested for feedback, which gives an insight into my progress as a teacher, as well as helping me to create targets for myself. The whole team is happy and ready to help whenever needed, and very often run workshops on expert pedagogical knowledge so the whole department is supported in every area and runs cohesively. The college is never shy of giving praise when due, and this creates an environment where staff feel supported by also seen and celebrated, so everyone strives to further their professional development.
What have you been involved in while working at Weston College?
At Weston College, I’ve been able to help run a pathway for A Level students with another staff member which provides students with knowledge that reaches out of the specifications. This has been insightful for both myself and the students, and has enabled many students to be entered into external academic qualifications. I also help run tea and talk on a weekly basis, which is a lovely opportunity to get to talk to the students and provide support for them.
What’s the best thing about working at Weston College?
The best thing about Weston College is the friendly and supportive atmosphere that’s at the heart of the college. On my first day, my other colleagues were so welcoming and encouraging which helped me find my feet and be settled in no time, allowing me to throw myself into my role and be the best educator I can be. I know I can always turn to my colleagues or manager for help if I am ever stressed or need some support. My manager checks in regularly to see how things are going and if any support is needed, which creates a positive and encouraging culture which is then echoed by the students.
