Fiona
Lecturer in Performing Arts
When did you join Weston College?
I joined Weston College in 2015, having previously worked at The Creative Youth Network & City of Bristol College.
Why did you join Weston College?
I was looking for an opportunity to develop my career in lecturing Performing Arts. The role came up twice; I did not get in the first time round, then it came up again and I got it!
How do you spend your day?
I work 3 days a week and my days are quite varied with teaching and tutoring learners. I can start my day in a variety of ways, from yoga, physical theatre, improvisation, play rehearsals, vocal training or theatre making. Most of my sessions start with a practical element.
How has the College supported your career development?
I have sourced professional development opportunities to help me improve my skills and industry knowledge and this has always been supported by my team.
I now direct plays for the Acting Pathway, which was also something I wished to achieve whilst working for the college, as well as the implementation of embedding yoga and meditation into the programme.
I was also given the opportunity to experience teaching at HE, after returning from Maternity Leave.
What have you been involved in while working at Weston College?
My goal is always to increase students' chances and experiences of working with reputable companies and industry professionals.
At Weston College, I have had the opportunity to be part of fascinating external projects, including adverts with ITV, directing performances at the Tobacco Factory, Tropicana and The Blakehay Theatre. As well as this, I’ve contributed to performance festivals (Climate Carnival and GLOW Festival) in conjunction with Culture Weston.
What’s the best thing about working at Weston College?
Positively helping the next creative generation to be part of the Weston movement.
My incredible team of creatives; we are the Performing Arts Family. We really support each other - there is nothing else like it.
Teaching the students to believe in themselves, encouraging them to make mistakes, love learning and most importantly to have fun whilst doing it!
The college has a professional, welcoming and supportive culture, and staff members are encouraged to be proud of their hard work.
