JED
Lecturer in Maths & English
When did you join Weston College?
I first started working for Forward Futures the College’s recruitment agency in April of 2019 as a Functional Skills Assessor. I then became a Weston College employee in 2020.
Why did you join Weston College?
I joined Weston College after relocating back to the area from a secondary school teaching role. A colleague asked if I had considered teaching Functional Skills before. I had not heard of it before but was intrigued.
How do you spend your day?
I spend most of my day teaching face to face maths classes at South West Skills Campus as well as teaching a number of online classes largely to apprentices.
How has the College supported your career development?
Weston College has given me the opportunity to achieve a Level 3 qualification for teaching English, which I found particularly useful. I have also had the chance to take part in a varied selection of CPD activities over the years.
What have you been involved in while working at Weston College?
During my time here I have visited many apprentices in their place of work to deliver one-to-one maths and English sessions with them. I have delivered lessons to a wide range of learners online and face-to-face in class settings. I have also taught intensive fast track style classes to learners for maths and English.
What’s the best thing about working at Weston College?
One of the best things for me is being able to work with apprentices and understand that maths is not easy for all, and often people do not like it, but we together we can work out the best way to solve problems and succeed. It’s really pleasing to see that people are learning and improving because of your efforts, which makes you feel like you are making a difference. The other great thing is that I work with people that are so passionate and motivated to want to do the best for their learners.
