Autocare Technician, Apprenticeship

An auto-care technician carries out a range of services and repairs to cars, car-derived vans, and light goods vehicles, working in an auto-care or ‘fast-fit’ centre, which may be part of a national chain or operated by a regional or local independent group or owner. This apprenticeship is perfect for you if you have a passion for automobiles and want to develop practical and theoretical skills.

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE

An auto-care technician also requires a unique combination of technical, retail and customer service skills, comfortably able to work in both a team and independently. They will use a range of tools, measuring and diagnostic equipment to identify and repair simple system faults.

Skills an apprentice will learn:

  • Contribute to maintaining a healthy and safe workplace, including the maintenance of key equipment and carrying out general housekeeping.

  • Carry out stock procedures including dealing with routine stock deliveries, placing stock into storage, carrying out stock rotation duties, and ordering parts for customers following company procedures.

  • Carry out vehicle safety inspections and routine maintenance in line with manufacturer's specifications or approved schedules, company procedures, and complete approved documentation.

  • Carry out replacement/repair and balancing of a range of light vehicle tires, including ultra-low profile, directional, asymmetric, and run-flat tires fitted to a range of wheel sizes and types.

  • Carry out the replacement of components on a specific range of vehicle systems including Steering & Suspension, Braking systems, Battery & Charging systems, exhaust systems, and Air-Conditioning systems.

  • Carry out 4-wheel Geometry operations including adjustments on a range of vehicles.

  • Use a range of specialist tools & equipment, mechanical & electrical measuring tools, and diagnostic equipment to support fault identification and repair.

  • Access vehicle technical data to inform inspections and make judgments on wear and serviceability.

  • Communicate effectively with customers, suppliers, and colleagues.

  • Use specific company IT systems within the workplace, including Point-of-sale systems and hand-held devices.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

The end-point assessment is formed of three assessment components – a knowledge test, practical observations, and a professional review (supported by a portfolio).

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES

Many apprentices are permanently employed, though you could choose to develop your skills further by opting for the Motor Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician (light vehicle) standard at Level 3.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Individual employers will set their own selection criteria for applicants. It is recommended that you can demonstrate an interest in the occupation as well as an ability to work in an organised and methodical way to identify and solve problems. You will also need to show that you can communicate well, including in written form.
