Operational Firefighter, Apprenticeship
Become a firefighter, and earn while you learn, with this apprenticeship which is open to anyone over the age of 18.
Firefighters tackle a wide range of emergencies, where problem resolving is vital, carried out in a calm and quick manner. Emergencies can involve tackling fires, searching and rescuing people and animals, and protecting against human and natural disasters.
The Level 3 apprenticeship provides valuable workplace skills and experience, while you earn a wage.
To comply with the Health & Safety at Work Act, all apprentices will complete their Initial Firefighter training. Having successfully completed the initial training the apprentice will work under supervision alongside other firefighters. We will also work with you to develop your maths and English skills.
Subjects/Topics Covered
You will spend 4 days a week with an employer and spend one day a week at college to learn the theoretical elements of the role.
The skills you will be taught will include applying correct measures to resolving and extinguish fires, using specialist equipment including respiratory in hazardous environments, operating specialist information, and technology systems. You will also learn to maintain your physical and mental wellbeing, while working at height, and in or around water.
Assessment Method
Apprentices will need to achieve the core skills and knowledge, behaviours contained within the apprenticeship standard and will be assessed through a portfolio of evidence, together with an end-point assessment (EPA), which consists of a knowledge test, a practical observation and a professional discussion.

Entry Requirements
Employers may have a number of specific entry requirements, these could include geographical location (response times); legal safeguards (e.g. Disclosure and Barring Service checks); age, medical and physical fitness including eyesight. These requirements and selection tests will vary between organisations - the decision to accept applicants will be made by the individual employer.
If you do not have English and maths at Level 2 you will need to do this ahead of your end-point assessment. Some employers may set out local requirements for entry such as a level of ICT literacy in addition to any or all of the above.
