Engineering Technologies, Diploma
This programme offers a seamless progression for learners from level two engineering programmes to apprenticeships or further education. This predominantly practical course builds upon the skills acquired in previous PEO (Principles of Engineering Operations) studies. The focus of the programme is to develop advanced technical abilities in machining and fabrication, with dedicated units covering topics such as advanced milling, turning, and computer numerical control (CNC) machining. With a strong track record of success in facilitating apprenticeships, the course also includes a valuable work experience component where students can enhance their skills and readiness for the workplace. By completing this diploma, you can gain a competitive edge and excel in your chosen engineering field.
Through a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory experiments, and real-world projects, you will gain a deep understanding of engineering principles, problem-solving techniques, and the latest technological advancements. With a focus on innovation, creativity, and critical thinking, the programme develops your ability to design, analyse, and optimise engineering systems. Whether you aspire to work in fields such as mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering, diploma provides a solid foundation for success in a wide range of engineering disciplines.
We pride ourselves on our strong partnerships with key local organisations. You'll become part of our Engineering Career Excellence Hub and enjoy a host of career-boosting benefits and valuable access to potential employers. Benefit from work experience opportunities, engaging trips and tours, guest lectures from industry experts and courses designed in collaboration with employers to meet industry demands. You'll gain invaluable industry insight and create numerous networking opportunities. By the time you complete your training, you'll be fully prepared for your future career, armed with the skills and knowledge that employers value.
WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE
The course involves mostly practical learning around machining, fabrication, welding, and the use of computers in engineering. You will follow a curriculum designed to give you the skills and knowledge to successfully gain an apprenticeship as a machinist, fabricator, or general engineer. You will build your skills around processes such as milling, turning, and welding until you are proficient in the process and can work on your own safely and to a good standard.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
The course is mainly assessed through practical observation. We will record what you are doing in the workshops and enter the evidence into a portfolio. This will be assessed on an ongoing basis so that you know where you are on the programme and can identify areas for improvement.
There are two online exams that you will be well prepared for and entered into when you are ready. On-demand resits are available for these in the rare case that you do not pass first time.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
You could choose to progress to higher education at university or seek employment in many different sectors. Many learners choose to complete an apprenticeship after the course, and we can help you find an opportunity at any one of our Blue-Chip Employers or SMEs. Work experience throughout the course can help you engage with an employer and secure an apprenticeship with them.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including English, maths and science. You will also be asked to attend an interview.
