A Levels
Level 3
Physics, A Level
A Level Physics will build on the knowledge and skills you’ve already developed through core and additional sciences at GCSE. The course encourages out of the box thinking, considering theories and explanations for world phenomena. This course will provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the physical world and prepare you for further studies in the field. You will explore the nature of matter, energy, and the interactions between them, gaining insights into the fundamental laws and theories that underpin the universe. The skills you’ll develop will be transferable to any future career path.
Located at our Loxton Campus, our Sixth Form offers state-of-the-art facilities designed to provide you with a university-like environment. You will benefit from access to our recently refurbished and well-equipped laboratories, which include modern apparatus and plenty of reference resources, allowing you to conduct experiments and investigations to reinforce your theoretical knowledge.
At Weston College, we prioritise your academic and career success. You will become a part of our Career Excellence Hub and benefit from a range of additional opportunities designed to enhance your career prospects. We have established partnerships with reputable research institutions and organisations, providing you with valuable work experience and research opportunities in the field of physics.
Throughout the course, you'll attend informative lectures, participate in field trips, and engage in practical laboratory work. These activities will expand your knowledge and provide you with real-world insights into the field of physics. In the first year of your course, you'll choose an additional pathway that aligns with your career aspirations.
You'll be taught by experienced teachers who are passionate about physics and dedicated to helping you succeed, and our dedicated Tutor Learning Mentors will help you develop effective study skills and prepare for exams. Whether you're considering pursuing higher education or seeking employment opportunities, we'll provide tailored support for university applications and job interviews.
WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE
You will study and learn about various aspects of matter and energy, with the theory content divided into six modules. Year one covers mechanics, electricity, and waves. You will also be introduced to some new areas of physics including particle physics and quantum physics.
In the second year you will cover fields and further mechanics, nuclear physics, medical physics, astrophysics, and thermal physics. You will develop your practical skills and problem-solving throughout the programme. It is mandatory to study maths.
This programme is part of a Sixth Form offer, learners typically choose three or four A Level subjects to study over a two-year period. Which A Levels you study can affect your choices at university and your future career. Take a look here at our other A Level programmes
ASSESSMENT METHOD
You will sit exams in your second year. You will also receive a pass or fail grade for skills developed in practical work.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
Physics is essential for degree courses in astronomy, computer technology, engineering, geophysics, meteorology, and physics itself.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including English, and grade 6 or above in core and additional sciences and maths. If choosing this A Level, you will also need to study A Level Maths alongside.
