This apprenticeship will help take your on-the-job skills to an advanced level. You will work alongside experienced tradespeople to develop your new skills and attend College one day a week to learn the theoretical side of your trade.
You will learn the complex aspects of site work or joinery, including complex roofing geometry and site operations. You will also be assessed on how you operate in a work environment, including maintaining a safe, clean, working environment and communicating with others.
An apprentice will learn to:

Apply safe working practices by current legislation, health, safety and welfare regulations, approved Codes of Practice, company guidance, and site-specific requirements, and taking account of changing circumstances. Apply safe working techniques when manual handling, working at height, and using access equipment and plant such as – fall prevention systems e.g., fall arrest, restraint and access systems, harnesses, and scaffold.

Apply safe use, storage, and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, and equipment including the use of PPE, LEV, and RPE.

Interpret relevant information from drawings, specifications and work instructions.

Estimate resource quantities to conduct work taking site measurements where appropriate e.g., quantity of fixings, length of timber.

Plan and undertake work practices productively.

Carry out a range of carpentry and joinery skills including measuring, marking out, fitting, cutting, splicing, mitering, scribing, horizontal and vertical levelling (including laser levelling), finishing, positioning, and securing.

Mark out and form advanced woodworking joints including splayed and plumb joints. * Install floor joists including cut-to-fit, solid timber, and coverings including planed, tongued and grooved (PTG) boards.

Maintain structural and non-structural carpentry work including doors, windows, and structural timbers, replace glazing, reinstate surfaces, timber doors, window frames, moulding’s, guttering, and fixings, and replace sash window cords.
ASSESSMENT METHOD
You will be assessed through practical tests, an assignment, a portfolio of work, and online multiple-choice tests. The end-point assessment consists of two key elements. The knowledge assessment consists of 40 questions designed to assess your understanding of the specific knowledge and behavioural requirements, while the practical assessment is a skills test.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES
You could become an advanced carpenter, construction site manager, or you could set up your own carpentry business. You can also increase your skills by applying to join the HNC in Construction and the Built Environment (Construction) at university. Upon completion, you are then eligible to apply for the Gold advanced craft CSCS card required to work on large construction projects
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You’ll need to have completed a Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship and be in relevant employment, but we can help you find this.
