Plumbing and Domestic Heating Technician, Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship offers a paid job alongside a comprehensive skills development programme, allowing you to gain technical knowledge and practical experience through a combination of on-campus learning and workplace training. This unique blend of theoretical instruction and hands-on application prepares you for a successful future as a plumbing and domestic heating technician.

Plumbing and domestic heating technicians work closely with supervisors and engineers to interpret design specifications and install and maintain plumbing and heating systems in domestic buildings. This includes tasks such as pipefitting, installing and repairing heating systems, handling drainage systems, and troubleshooting plumbing issues.

Our apprenticeships are led by experienced professionals who possess deep knowledge of the industry. They provide specialised training and expert guidance, and giving you a competitive edge in the job market.

These facilities include well-equipped workshops dedicated to plumbing and domestic heating, an industry-standard materials testing lab, a wide range of tools and equipment, and specialised software packages for relevant subjects.

WHAT DOES THIS COURSE INVOLVE

You will also attend College for one day a week to learn the technical side of your trade. Apprentices will learn:

  • Health and safety including health and safety test which meets the requirements to obtain a CSCS card through the JIB-PMES.

  • Common plumbing processes and techniques including the use of hand and power tools, types of pipework and their jointing principles.

  • Installation of domestic plumbing and heating pipework.

  • Types and layout features of cold water, hot water, central heating, rainwater systems, and sanitary appliances pipework systems.

  • Advanced scientific principles including force, pressure and flow, energy, heat and power, and principles of electricity.

  • Installing, testing and decommissioning of cold/hot water, central heating and rainwater systems sanitary appliances and pipework systems.

  • Understanding of domestic fuel systems and environmental technology systems.

  • Work on electrical supplies/circuits for the control of plumbing/domestic heating systems.

  • One of four pathways – gas, solid fuel, oil, or environmental technologies.

  • Completion of the gas pathway will include ISA/ACS assessment to become a member of the Gas Safe Register.

  • Completion of the environmental technologies pathway will meet the criteria to register on the MCS competent person scheme for Solar Thermal and Heat Pump nominated technical persons.

  • Completion of the oil pathway will include OFTEC courses and assessments to register with the OFTEC competent person scheme.

  • Completion of the solid fuel pathway including HETAS courses and assessments to enable registration on the HETAS competent person scheme.

    ASSESSMENT METHOD

Your end point assessment will include a multi-choice exam, a design project, a practical installation test, and a professional discussion. This will occur in the last 3 months of your apprenticeship.

FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES

Many of our apprentices are kept on by their employers at the end of their programme. You can also increase your skills and unlock higher-paid roles by studying Weston College’s Level 3 Diploma in Plumbing.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will have previously completed a Level 2 plumbing and heating apprenticeship or NVQ to start this programme. You will also need to be in relevant employment, but we can help you find this. You will also need to be assessed to ensure you can complete the English and maths requirement.
