<p>Hello everyone, my name is Callum Kavanagh, and I am studying the <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/compu… Production Design and development T level (DPDD)</a> at Weston College. I would love to share my experience of my industry placement at <a href="https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/">Lloyds Banking Group</a> and how I managed to get to where I am.</p><drupal-entity data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="ef5a59b3-c683-4294-8b08-453fa2a5dc5b" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{&quot;image_style&quot;:&quot;max_285x285&quot;,&quot;image_link&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;image_loading&quot;:{&quot;attribute&quot;:&quot;lazy&quot;}}">&nbsp;</drupal-entity><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>My Journey at Weston College</strong></p><p>Before joining the <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/compu… T Level</a> with Weston College, I completed a level 2 course (due to not having the GCSE qualifications) as a progression route to get to the T Level. This helped to build my confidence and basic computing knowledge and even basic academic skills. With support from my Level 2 course, I then achieved a grade I was happy with and progressed with the necessary qualifications to the <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/compu… Production Design and Development T Level</a>.</p><p>Once I started the T Level I was quickly introduced to the hands-on working experience side of the T Level, with talks of employers and how we will be supported in finding them for the Industry Placement module of our course.</p><p>We got to experience a full process of interviews and questions from employers and those who got accepted by an employer could progress onto the industry placement with them. Our lecturer and careers advisors helped train us for these interviews and build our CVS and interview skills.</p><p><strong>My Role at Lloyds Banking Group</strong></p><p>During my placement at <a href="https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/">Lloyds Banking Group</a>, I worked within a data team. I took part in Data Visualisation and Software Development; the work I was tasked with was part of a large-scale strategic project that had a real impact on the company. I was able to work alongside experts in the field, where I completed a solo project that I was tasked with by <a href="https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/">Lloyds Banking Group</a>. This solo project was directly linked to a real-world project that the team was working on, and I was given the task of creating a program to help the teams efficiency. I later found out the program I made was used and built upon by another member of the team who I worked closely with and is now standard use within the team!</p><p>I managed to learn so much within the industry by working there, getting real experience truly is the best way to learn and grow as a developer. I learnt a variety of skills from programming to accessibility and data visualisation, the learning wasn’t only hard skills for the workplace but also key skills transferable to any situation and daily life. I learnt how to work effectively within a team environment and how to complete presentations to large scale audiences. I was able to complete a presentation about my project to over 100 other professionals during a team’s call and sharing my ideas within the company.</p><p><strong>How I was Supported</strong></p><p>Weston College and <a href="https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/">Lloyds Banking Group</a> were both incredible at providing support within the industry placement. <a href="https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/">Lloyds Banking Group</a> always had team members willing to mentor me and answer any questions I had about my own project or the company itself. Weston College maintained a strong line of communication while I was within <a href="https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/">Lloyds Banking Group,</a> checking everything was going as planned and no changes needed to be made.</p><p>As someone who struggles with ADHD, I had worries about if I would be able to stay focused and complete this course. I worried how I would do within a working environment and how I could manage my problems. However, Weston College provided me with support throughout the placement, which was done primarily by a personal member of the ADHD support team at Weston College who I was able to speak to. This became a regular occurrence, and I now meet with him on a regular basis where I learn to manage my ADHD. I also received support from my tutors as they had an understanding of my situation and were always willing to speak with me if I ever had any problems.</p><p><strong>Standout Moments</strong></p><p>The main standout moment for me was being given the trust to take on a solo project and given time to be by myself and work on that project. Being included within the team and not just given some training made me feel important and wanted by the team. This made my working environment an enjoyable place to be and one I could thrive in.</p><p><strong>Plans Following T Level Completion</strong></p><p>After my Industry Placement with <a href="https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/">Lloyd’s Banking Group</a>, I was able to show them my dedication and desire to work further with them. Because of this, I have been offered an apprenticeship with <a href="https://www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/">Lloyd’s Banking Group</a> within the same team I worked with during my industry placement.</p><p>My advice to others considering the T Level is – DO IT! The T Level course is an incredible course for not only its level of educational standards, but also the opportunity to work within a company and get real experience, which is worth more than any number of textbooks could teach you. <p style="margin-bottom:8px;">On January 28<em>th</em>, our <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/compu…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/compu…; target="_blank">Esports</a> learners took an exciting trip to Sky Guild Gaming Centre where our Weston Waveriders team competed against 3 teams in the Viper’s Chamber Tournament: London Legion from the College of Esports, Conel Cyphers from the Capital City College, and City from the University of London.</p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;">This amazing tournament not only gave our learners the chance to play up against fantastic teams from across London in a Local Area Network (LAN) event, but it also raised money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital charity who give seriously ill children the best chance and the best childhood possible.</p><drupal-entity alt="&quot;Students competing in the tournament on the computer&quot;" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="041392bb-e947-498a-ab20-34a7c4cfa544" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{&quot;image_style&quot;:&quot;max_500x500&quot;,&quot;image_link&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;image_loading&quot;:{&quot;attribute&quot;:&quot;lazy&quot;}}">&nbsp;</drupal-entity><p>&nbsp;</p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;">During the tournament, our learners first went up against the London Legion team where they fought hard, however they unfortunately lost as they couldn't find an answer to their competitors attacking side. This was a chance to not only meet with like-minded individuals with a passion for Esports, but also network with industry professionals like Nik Turner and Adrian Liu, and gain further experience at an in-person tournament.</p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;">Will Price, one of our Esports lecturers, added, “this trip greatly benefitted our learners as they got to interact and experience a LAN event that was managed to a professional level, as well as get to interact with some top industry leaders in the Esports space in the UK.</p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;">The experience of competing against other university teams gives them a taste of what Esports at University looks like, with some positive experiences for the future and a fun filled trip as a core memory for them to leave the college with.”</p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;">The SCL College students assisted in the event organisation and did an excellent job in everything they did, from production and hosting to administration and referees, they demonstrated fantastic skills and acted as a template for our learners of what to do when it comes to the Events project that all Esports students complete during their course.</p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;">Overall, it was a very successful day that not only gave our learners the chance to improve their skills in a physical tournament, but also raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital charity. They walked away with a better understanding of alternative game tactics which will help develop their overall performance, as well as some goodies including MSI baseball caps and an adorable collection of plushies!</p><p style="margin-bottom:8px;">Thank you to Sky Guild Gaming Centre for hosting our learners and holding such an amazing event. <p>T Levels can be a great stepping stone for students interested in <a href="https://www.ucw.ac.uk/course-category/apprenticeship/">degree apprenticeships</a>. They provide a solid foundation of technical knowledge and practical skills that are often highly relevant to apprenticeships in industries like engineering, digital, and healthcare.</p><p>We spoke with two Degree Apprenticeship learners from <a href="https://www.ucw.ac.uk/">UCW</a&gt;, Joshua and Alexander, who both also completed <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/t-lev… Levels</a> at Weston College, to discover how their T Level experience has influenced their success in their Degree Apprenticeships.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>What T Level did you study at Weston College, and which degree apprenticeship are you now currently doing at UCW?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua:</strong> I studied the T Level in <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/compu… Production, Design, and Development</a> at Weston College, and now I’m doing a degree apprenticeship in <a href="https://www.ucw.ac.uk/courses/digital-and-technology-solutions-bsc-hons… Development</a> at UCW.</p><p><strong>Alexander:</strong> I studied <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/compu… Production, Design and Development (DPDD)</a> and I am currently attending the <a href="https://www.ucw.ac.uk/courses/digital-and-technology-solutions-bsc-hons…; degree apprenticeship.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Which company are you currently working with for your degree apprenticeship?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua:</strong> I am currently working for <a href="https://mttltd.com/">Motor Trade Technologies (MTT)</a> a company in the automotive industry which create garage management software and multiple other solutions in the industry.</p><p><strong>Alexander:</strong> I am currently working for <a href="https://www.airbus.com/en">Airbus</a>.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>What were some highlights of your T Level experience?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua:</strong> My main highlight for the T-Level is the industry placement I did for TwistedWeb, which is the sister company to MTT, as it allowed me to get an understanding of life in a workplace. It also taught me soft skills with talking to customers and skills I needed for my exams in college. Another highlight would be the final major project in my second year, as most people would say they hate exams, this exam was the most fun I had. It included in creating a web application based on a scenario given and going through the steps of the software cycle – this was the best part of my two years there.</p><p><strong>Alexander:</strong> The main highlight was the work experience! For me it was a very unique thing and my placement at Sen5e IT pushed my career forward a lot. Another highlight of my T Level was the teaching style, and the events that were held.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>What inspired you to do a degree apprenticeship following your T Level?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua:</strong> As a person who learns better by doing things in a practical way, I have always had my head set on continuing my education whilst gaining work experience, and the apprenticeship seemed like the perfect option. Also, seeing the students in the year above me in the T Level go to amazing apprenticeships, I felt like I should follow their footsteps and continue learning after my T Level.</p><p><strong>Alexander:</strong> The inspiration came from a mix of working in the workplace, as well as the educational side of a degree apprenticeship. As degree apprenticeships work in a similar way to my T Level, I found that the balance between the work experience and college really suited me, so I chose to continue with the same balance on the degree apprenticeship scheme.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>How has your T Level helped you with your degree apprenticeship at UCW?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua: </strong>The technical and theoretical skills I learnt during my T-Level have been the biggest help. I was already familiar with programming languages and software development practices. This made it a lot easier for me to handle the challenges at UCW whilst also contributing to the workplace.</p><p><strong>Alexander:</strong> The main thing that helped me with my degree apprenticeship from the T-Level was the work experience as it gave me an insight into what the work would be like and the transferable skills from coding.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>How did you find the transition from T Levels to degree apprenticeship?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua: </strong>The T-Level gave me a solid foundation, but the apprenticeship added another level of academic hardship, which took me a while to adjust to. Balancing work and study has also been a challenge, but it is still rewarding to see feedback on both university projects and work projects.</p><p><strong>Alexander:</strong> I found the transition to be very simple! The T-Level prepares you for the degree apprenticeship – it really feels like the course was built for the transfer into a degree apprenticeship.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>How has the work placement you did during your T Level helped you in your current workplace for your degree apprenticeship?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua:</strong> My work placement during my T-Level studies was the most valuable part of it. I learned how to communicate with clients, working as part of teams and managing deadlines. These are skills I use every day in my apprenticeship. It also gave me a better understanding of how the theory I was learning in the classroom applied in the real world.</p><p><strong>Alexander:</strong> The work placement I did during my T-Level was the best experience I have had in a workplace. It has helped me in my current workplace as I know how to act and how to present professionally within a work environment. All in all, it really prepared me for the whole of my current position at Airbus.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>What advice would you give to anyone considering doing T Levels?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua: </strong>If you are looking for a practical career, no matter what industry it is, and want to develop your hands-on skills while still getting a solid foundation in your industry, I would recommend T Levels time and time again. It's the best way to gain experience in a workplace and opens the door to apprenticeships, further education and even jobs. In my industry most companies are after experience when looking at CVs, and T Levels are your best friend when looking for experience in specific fields. One thing I had in my first year was the inability to gain a placement, but it took time and networking across the area to land a spot. I will always say not to worry and stay calm as there are always people to help you, the amount of support you get is amazing.</p><p><strong>Alexander:</strong> Do it - plain and simple! The T-Level is the best pathway to prepare you for both the workplace and a degree as it teaches you to balance your time and keep on top of your assignments. T Levels also teach you all the essential skills that every workplace is looking for and there is nothing more valuable than that.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>What advice would you give anyone considering doing a degree apprenticeship?</strong></p><p><strong>Joshua:</strong> A degree apprenticeship is an excellent way to earn while you learn. You get to apply what you’re studying in real-time, which is incredibly valuable. It’s hard work, but the payoff is worth it. I’d advise anyone considering it to be ready for the balance of work and study, but also to embrace the opportunity to develop both academically and professionally.</p><p><strong>Alexander: </strong>Again, plain and simple, do it! It is the best way to complete a degree and hopefully acquire a job by the end of it! Again, it teaches discipline, time management and essential social skills.
