Qualifications Explained

At Weston College we know that everyone learns differently. That’s why we deliver a variety of different qualification types - to give you the chance to learn in the way that suits you the most.

A Levels

A Levels develop the knowledge, skills and study habits to excel at university, as well as the attributes recognised by employers. Your academic studies will be complemented with enrichment opportunities such as trips, mentoring and work experience, providing the perfect springboard for your future career. A Levels are assessed through exams at the end of two years of study. Most learners study three subjects - some choose four.

With an apprenticeship you’ll go straight into the workplace and be shown clear routes to progress straight into employment within a specific occupation. You can achieve nationally recognised qualifications, earn a wage, and gain skills that will see you get ahead. On average you will spend 20% of your learning time in the college and 80% within the workplace..

Professional and Technical Qualifications

Professional and technical qualifications are designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to gain employment within specific industries or occupations. They provide a balance between theory and practical skills development. They are suited to those who want to get hands-on experience within a particular vocational area. These programmes include work placements. Assessment is more varied and will include exams, coursework and practical work.

Traineeships

Traineeships are a great way for 16 to 24-year-olds who haven’t yet gained the skills and experiences necessary to apply for jobs and apprenticeships. They are taught mostly in the workplace and include a mixture of personal and social development, and employability skills. The aim of a traineeship is to train you within a company so that you are more likely to be offered an apprenticeship or a job.

T-Levels Logo

T Levels give you the chance to learn what a real career is like while you continue your studies. T Levels have been designed with leading businesses and employers to give you the knowledge and skills you need, including a minimum of 45 days on an industry placement – this means you will spend 80% of your learning time in College and 20% within the workplace.

Construction T Level learners built a seat from pallets at Uncle Paul's Chilli Farm

The Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level learners have had another exciting day out, visiting Uncle Paul’s Chilli Farm in Butcombe as part of their induction.

Weston College have been proud partners of Uncle Paul’s Chilli Farm for many years and have supported many of our students during this time. It is an amazing charity that supports and empowers socially disadvantaged people with learning difficulties, creating an immersive and safe environment where they can learn, build their confidence, and prepare for employment.

By taking our Construction T Level learners here, it gives them a better understanding of some of our partner charities and how important it is to give back to society. During this trip, they took part in team-building activities and learnt new skills to help introduce them to the course.

Before the main activity commenced, the students took a tour of the farm to familiarise themselves with the environment, exploring the crops and admiring the animals as they went. They were then tasked with a team building, survival activity that required them to light a fire from scratch and boil a ‘Kelly kettle’ full of water to make everyone a hot chocolate or coffee.
<drupal-entity alt=""Learners pouring the water they boiled to make drinks for the class"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="cf7c7bd1-60bf-4a1d-8d8a-8bddb09d28d1" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

Once everyone was refreshed and hydrated, the students began working on their main task: repurposing donated pallets into furniture!

Uncle Paul’s Chilli Farm had received some wooden pallets as a donation but had no real use for them, so asked our year 1 Construction T Level students if they could design and create pieces of furniture in groups that could be used around the farm, reducing waste and improving sustainability.
<drupal-entity alt=""Students building a seat out of wooden pallets at the Chilli Farm"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f04e0003-630e-412a-bff3-25e2073ae53a" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

Both groups decided to repurpose the pallets into seats so they could be used around the farm by both learners and visitors. Once they had been made, the seats were painted green, ready to be used around the farm.

But the fun didn’t stop there! Some learners also took part in the ‘Chilli Challenge’ where they got the chance to try a variety of Uncle Paul’s homegrown chillies, some of which proved to be very hot!
<drupal-entity alt=""Learner Charles after eating a home-grown chilli"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="b1de16c8-cda4-4c37-bfb2-fbf803311ec1" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

Daniel Comerford, one of our Construction lecturers at Weston College, said “everyone enjoyed the day very much. Old picnic benches that the learners will be restoring

Our adult learners from the Empower programme in the <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/cours…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/cours…; target="_blank">Faculty of Inclusive Practice have been tasked with an important project that will test their skills, creativity, and decision-making, giving them chance to follow a brief and consider different factors that may affect their final product.

These learners are working with Griffiths Farrans JV and Bristol Airport to restore 4 picnic benches for Oatfield playground in Backwell. After lots of wear and tear, these benches have become old and damaged but are a community favourite in the playground. Rather than replacing them, our FIP students have been asked to refurbish them and salvage what they can to improve sustainability and reduce waste.
<drupal-entity alt=""Old benches from Oakfield park that will be refurbished by students"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="f0a42126-fb64-4caa-a26d-23629a5523cb" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

Griffiths Farrans JV are building a new public transportation interchange hub and multi-storey car park at Bristol Airport, which intends to reduce congestion, increase convenience, and encourage more public transport.

Our guest speakers from Griffiths and Farrans JV, Kate and Emily, came to excite our learners and get them involved, giving them the chance to help out a local community but also show them the increase in opportunities available in the future.
<drupal-entity alt=""Faculty of inclusive practice students listening to guest lecturers from Griffiths and Farrans"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="7dc3e5bd-357f-4eb7-b598-aa4d92dfce07" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

This project is for the students to not only restore the pre-existing benches, but also to create one new bench that is wheelchair accessible and suitable for all weathers. It can be made from any materials, and the students have complete freedom, with all the required materials being funded by Griffiths Farrans JV.

The students were thrilled by the possibilities, immediately discussing different designs and considering a variety of accessibility options for a wide range of wheelchairs. They began to explore the different materials that would be best suited for their design ideas as well as considering how many seats they wish to include.

Once the learners decide on the design as a group, they will begin to put their plan in motion with the help of their lecturers and technicians to ensure everything is carried out safely. By giving the learners this task, it builds their confidence, allows them to put their ideas into practice, and develop important transferrable skills in a supported environment which they can take with them after college.

A big thank you to Griffiths Farrans JV for giving our students this opportunity! We’re excited to see how it turns out.

<a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/cours…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/cours…; target="_blank">Weston college is one of four SEND Centres for Excellence, click her to find out more.

Student cutting up fish during Thatcher's Takeover

Our <a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/hospi…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/hospi…; target="_blank">Hospitality and Catering learners are excelling with their talents, creating many dishes per week for our staff and students, and developing their skills more and more each time. To upscale their abilities even further, chefs from the Railway at Thatchers came in and hosted a seafood masterclass, providing them with professional, hands-on experience that they can use throughout their course.

During this masterclass, James, the head chef, and Callum, the sous chef, taught the students how to prepare fish from whole but also how to steam mussels and create delicious dishes that they likely had not previously attempted.

To prepare the fish, the learners had to remove the skeleton very carefully which takes skill and precision. The two types of fish the learners used were seabass and plaice in order to master both flat and round fish. Once the fish were ready, the learners moved on to prepping the remaining ingredients to make their final dishes: plaice en papilotte with fennel and orange, and a seabass dish with romesco sauce and crispy garlic.
<drupal-entity alt=""A student preparing a fish"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="3d909d0c-66fe-4a5e-b51d-81259372e8c9" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

These dishes turned out incredible, especially for their first try, and was an excellent portrayal of the students’ hard work and determination. Not only did they learn more about how to prepare and cook seafood, they also impressed the Head Chef at the Railway not only with their cooking, but also their enthusiasm.
<drupal-entity alt=""Learners final seabass dish with romesco sauce and crispy garlic"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="09b9d7d0-ddb0-406f-bfb6-7b2572f527cd" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

The chefs then delivered a session on how to produce steamed mussels (in cider of course!), prepare prawns, and create an Asian broth from a stock. This broth was then served with the fresh oysters to make another delicious seafood dish. The learners were then able to try traditional oysters with lemon and tabasco as well.
<drupal-entity alt=""Final mussel dish prepared in the masterclass"" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c6ce8d29-16ed-4e60-a3a7-283f5457ef67" data-embed-button="file_browser" data-entity-embed-display="image:image" data-entity-embed-display-settings="{"image_style":"max_500x500","image_link":"","image_loading":{"attribute":"lazy"}}"> </drupal-entity>

James, the Head Chef at the Railway, oversees all of the food, from the daily changing menus, to the special event menus and corporate buffets. James said, “the students all seemed very interested in the masterclass and gave it their all. All the final dishes were great, and it was good fun seeing some of them try oysters for the first time!”

At Thatchers, they take on many apprentices in order to build the next generation of staff in a hands-on but supportive environment, and the Railway do just that. “It’s great having apprentices working with us who are keen to cook great food and I’m happy to have the opportunity to give a little back to the future of our industry.”

Not only did the students learn invaluable skills from this professional masterclass, but they also enjoyed the day and left with more confidence in preparing and cooking seafood. They also built upon their taste pallets by trying a variety of dishes that they may not normally get the opportunity to try.

Jenna Ratcliffe, Head of Service Sectors at Weston College, says, “our Careers Excellence Hub (CEH) partnership with Thatchers highlights our commitment to meaningful employer connections. We are grateful that these relationships are directly benefitting our students’ readiness for a career and are positively impacting their experience here at Weston College.”

We’d like to give a big thank you to James and Callum from the Railway at Thatchers for running this fantastic masterclass for our students, it was an extremely successful day!

<a href="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/hospi…; rel="noreferrer noopener" title="https://www.weston.ac.uk/what-can-i-study/courses-16-18-year-olds/hospi…; target="_blank">If you’re interested in applying to a Hospitality and Catering course in September, click here.
